REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE
Made it till the end of the semester! To be honest, this was a challenging yet rewarding module as through all the struggles I faced it made me learn a lot of things, and we got to create books (including ebooks) as the final outcome which was pretty interesting. Before this module, I didn't have much experience of designing an entire book, including ebooks. Hence why this module really taught me a lot of things in relation to creating and designing them. Looking back at the development of my layouts, I could definitely see improvements and I also cringe when looking back at the first layout as it was so bad. Similar to the previous modules in the past semesters, we were also required to write our reflections. It does seem like an extra work for us but I still do think that it is a good thing to do as it allows me to reflect back on what I have done and what are the things I observed and noticed that could help me learn and improve along the way. An advantage from this module was that it does help with other modules. For example, we needed to design our dissertation book and also a brand book for brand corporate identity class.

OBSERVATION
Throughout this module, I observed that everyone's book in a way reflected their personality and design styles. It was interesting to have a look at other's works as everyone's books are so different from one another. Another thing I observed was that the skills learned in this class are really important and also beneficial when it comes to designing pretty much anything to do with text and layouts. What I observed to be really cool was the ebooks, and without this module I wouldn't have known that InDesign could include animations and navigation buttons, and basically bring a book to life. With the e-portfolios, even though it is time consuming I feel that it is always good to be able to document your design process and to see what is done to get to the final outcome, rather than just seeing the final outcome on its own. It also allows me to look back on the improvements, lessons and mistakes made, to see how far I've come.

FINDINGS
One of the main things I realised is that designing and creating a book is no easy job. It requires so much time and effort to perfect all the details. Through this I gained a deeper appreciation whenever I look at books and magazines. It also made me more sensitive towards text, visuals and layouts. I also learned that time management is so important. This semester was honestly really intense and busy with all the workloads from all modules, so I found that I really needed to try and manage my time well to not fall back and loose track on what to do. I'll admit that there were days where I found myself feeling really unmotivated and unproductive, however I still tried to push myself to do what needs to be done. Overall, this module was a great learning experience for me. I still feel like I could've done better with my designs as I'm not 100% happy with it but I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself and just be proud of what I've done, and do better in my future projects.
