INSTRUCTIONS
07/01/19 (Week 1)
In the first day of class, we were introduced to what this module is about and what are the projects to be done. From there, we learned that the theme for our project is "Living With Nature". The project is to be done in groups so we were divided in groups of 4 by Mr Charles and Ms Jinchi. I grouped up with Xiao Shi and Xin Yi.
The first project is a proposal, in which we need to come up with a 200 word description defining and interpreting the theme relating to the culture of our study trip, in which it is Korea for me. We also needed ideas of what we intend to do that relate to the theme as well as the aspects of Korean culture. As a group, we started listing down the aspects of Korean culture, and see where we can go from there.
08/01/19 - 10/01/19 (Week 1)
In the next few days, we started by individually conducted our own research and brainstormed some ideas. Then, we shared our ideas and findings with each other and compiled them into a set of slides. This acts as our first draft of ideas.
Here is a PDF of the slides which includes a rough draft of what we came up with so far.
11/01/19 (Week 1)
During Friday's class, we got to have a consultation with the lecturers and share with them what we've come up with so far.
Ms Jinchi also mentioned something important, and that is about the write-up to define and interpret the theme - Living With Nature. She informed us that before coming up with ideas and aspects of the culture of Korea, we should start by thinking about the theme, and how we want to interpret it. The concept and way we define this theme will then guide us to what we intend to do.
At this stage, my group did not come up with our own interpretation on the theme yet and jumped straight to the ideas. Therefore, we needed to think further on what we want the theme to mean and represent.
During our turn to consult with Mr Charles, we got to share with him what we've thought of so far (as seen in the pdf above). He mentioned that we could have a different thinking of what nature means, and not directly related to plants and all that. He gave several examples which made us realise that we should indeed think further on how we want to interpret this theme in relation to the culture of the place.
12/01/19 - 13/01/19 (Week 1)
During the weekends, my group members and I got to share among us on the interpretation of nature as well as ideas on what we could study about. Through our discussion, we knew that we wanted our interpretation of living with nature to be about the five traditional colours of Korea as well as the motifs, as we found out through research that these elements have meanings to them that relate back with nature and it well reflects their culture.
Here is the first attempt (not final) of the proposal draft, involving more research on our interpretation.
14/01/19-17/01/19 (Week 2)
This week we used our time to further discuss on our proposal, in preparation for the presentation on Friday. Ms Jinchi also posted on Google Classroom in which she clearly explained the outlines of what we're doing. This was really helpful as we were a little confused with what to do for the preliminary ideas.
We proceeded to discuss and come up with our problem questions, objectives and the five preliminary ideas.
18/01/19 (Week 2)
It's presentation day! My group got to be the first to present which made me a little nervous, but in the end it was all good.
Here are my final presentation slides!
Feedback: Mr Charles mentioned that our proposal was good, and that our problem questions were well written and it helped to lead us to the five ideas we have. He also gave a suggestion that we could look into textures.
