LECTURE NOTES

09/04/19 (Week 2)
How to Write an Effective Discussion

Not a "lecture" note, but a document regarding writing an effective discussion was shared with us and I found it to be really informative and useful. I downloaded the pdf and highlighted the important points. Ms Jinchi also has printed copies of the document and gave them to us which was great as I always prefer having hardcopy of things.

Here is the document shared with us:

INSTRUCTIONS

02/04/19 (Week 1)
In the first class of this module, we were briefed and introduced to what this module is about and how we are going to move forward from the previous semester's module, Design Research Methodology .

Firstly, our project to begin this module with is about creating the draft of our dissertation. The contents that are needed to be included are listed out in the assignment brief.

Before anything else, we were told to look through our slides from the previous semester, to refresh our minds and look back on what we've done to see if any adjustments wants to be made. As for me, I  decided to make some adjustments to my research questions and objectives, for it to best suit the data I have collected.

Here are the changes I've made to the research questions and objectives. *I showed both the initial and updated ones in the slides below.

In class, Ms Jinchi also told us to create a matrix. Based on our research questions, highlight the keywords in which they will be the topics for discussion. For each keyword/topic, we needed columns for the details, literature and collected data.

Here is the first draft of my matrix, for two research questions.

Besides that, we were also required to write around 2-3 literature review before the next class. I already wrote one in the previous semester so I decided to write another 2 reviews.

09/04/19 (Week 2)
This week, I got to share with Ms Jinchi the changes made to my research objectives and questions, as well as the progress of the matrix and literature review. With the feedback received, I needed to make the necessary changes to improve on the work.

After the consultation, she also brief us on what to do next. We needed to complete all the literature reviews, update our matrix and start to work on the draft, following the sequence of contents given in the brief.

Here is the updated matrix.

In a word doc, I started to work on the draft which included these topics.

Contents
1.  Introduction
2.  Problem Statement
3.  Research Objective
4.  Research Question
5.  Literature Review
6.  Research Methodology
     6.1. Visual Analysis
     6.2.  Survey
7.  Collected Primary Data
8.  Analysis & Discussion
9.  Conclusion
10. Reference List
11. Picture Credit List
12. Appendices

16/04/19 (Week 3)
In today's class, I got to have a consultation with Ms Jinchi to further move on with the dissertation draft. We discussed about the contents to write, such as the discussion section and how it can be broken down into different sub-topics. By the next week, we should try to have two sub-topics written out.

23/04/19 (Week 4)
For this week, we got to share our progress on the dissertation with Ms Jinchi. Last week I managed to write 3 sub-topics for my discussion and also some other parts of the dissertation, and I got to receive feedback on it. Through the consultation, I now have a clearer idea and direction on what to do. From there, we just needed to continue working on it.

30/04/19 (Week 5)
Showed more progress on the dissertation draft and received feedback on what I've done. There were definitely some areas of improvement that can be done with make it better. In general, I was lacking in some elaboration to make my content much clearer. With the feedback given, I needed to further work on it and finish it, as the due date is the following week.

07/05/19 (Week 6)
Finished most of the dissertation draft by Tuesday's class and had another round of consultation. The due date for both the hardcopy and soft copy was due on Friday so I had time to make the necessary changes before submission day.

Here if the final draft of my dissertation:

FEEDBACK

09/04/19 (Week 2)
Firstly, I showed my updated research questions and objectives as I made some changes to it to better suit my collected data. Ms Jinchi said that it was independent of me to do so. Then, I showed my literature review essay. I needed to make some adjustments and further explain some points to make it clearer. She mentioned that it was overall well written. Next comes the matrix. I was given the feedback that I should elaborate further on the details, collected data, and include more literature, as it will help in my discussion.

16/04/19 (Week 3)
An introductory sentence should be included at the start of every section, and at the end of it we should give a short summary and briefly introduce the next section. For the introduction, it should be a brief to the structure to the dissertation. The answers from the open ended questions can be summarised, instead of listing every answer out. When it comes to the discussion section, it can be split into sub-topics, organised in a way that it has a flow from one to the other. For the case study, I should only focus on Lush. Lastly, relevant pictures could also be added to my dissertation.

23/04/19 (Week 4)
The problem statement, research objectives and research questions should fall under the same section. For the appendices, I can split it into 2 parts for each research methods. In that section, I should list out what I’m looking at for the visual analysis and the questions for the survey, both with justification. Pictures can be added and described briefly too. I also need to think about the relationship of the beauty product packaging with the design elements. Overall, she was happy with our progress.

30/04/19 (Week 5)
In the table of contents, the page numbers should be included for the subtopics as well. For the images used, it should have a figure number, a caption and citation. The way I have decided to display the collect primary data is okay and I can proceed with it. I can give definitions and also justification to what I am discussing about to make it clearer. As for my section of discussion, I should have further elaboration on my content and images to go with it. Lastly, my justification for the section of appendices is okay.

07/05/19 (Week 6)
For this week I was mostly done with my dissertation draft and I got to receive feedback on it. For the citation, it should make use of an ampersand and not the actual spelling of “and”. If there’s more than 2 authors, it should use et, al. As for the content written, I could elaborate more on some areas. I should also add pictures in between my discussion so readers will have a better idea of what I am writing about.

23/05/19 (Week 8)
[written feedback on hardcopy dissertation]

Areas of improvement
-Include more figures where necessary as evidence, to magnify my point
-Methodology: change to past tense as the research is already carried out
-Justify the importance of looking into the formal qualities and the ways the packaging designs are being promoted
-Include primary data from visual analysis into discussion
-How and why the stories featured by Lush encourages and promote sustainability
-Identify strengths and weaknesses of social media
-A table for the results of the survey can be done

Comments
-Organised and articulate
-Well-cited, in sequence, much clarity
-Observant and quite critical in thinking
-Good command in English, rendered effective communication
-Demonstrates clear understanding of the texts read
-Well justified with all consideration made
-Use of relevant visuals to aid reader’s understanding—good.
-Background related to research problem
-Utilised survey data to help strengthen the writing where applicable—good.
-Able to view primary and secondary data where necessary to help form a sound discussion.

28/05/19 (Week 9)
For the levels of packaging I can elaborate and describe the functions of it. For the figure with multiple images, it can be labelled and differentiated with a, b, c and so on. For the table, I could add another column for the summary of the responses and briefly discuss about what it means. Overall, improvements were done and I can continue to work on the adjustments and elaboration of the content. Then, start with the design and layout of my book.
