FEEDBACK
10/04/19 (Week 2)
Specific feedback for week 1's logo analysis: From my slides, it can be seen that I’m someone that is organised, but that doesn’t mean that I should stick to a single format and direction while writing about the logos. I should be free to write what I want about the logo, including my own opinion and thoughts about them. In my description, I could also include some historical information about the brand.
17/04/19 (Week 3)
Specific feedback for week 2's logo analysis: Overall I've analysed the logos well, and Ms Lillian found some to be interesting. However, she said I could push myself a little further and search up more about the brand such as where the name came from, what are the variations of it, and the connection of what I see and analyse. I should also add links as to where I get my sources from.
24/04/19 (Week 4)
Specific feedback for week 3's logo analysis: It would be good if I could look search up brands with similar logos and compare them. Some analysis is well elaborated, while for some I need to think more critically about it.
02/05/19 (Week 5)
Specific feedback for week 4's logo analysis: Overall, it can be seen that I have improved in my analysis compared to the analysis in the previous weeks. She mentioned that it is more elaborated and well written. (yay!)
08/05/19 (Week 6)
No feedback received.
REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE
In this project, I got to analyse 20 logos weekly and compile them in a set of slides. Initially, I wasn't being critical enough and my analysis was just on the surface and not in-depth. Throughout the weeks, I learned to do more research on the brand and be a lot more critical in my analysis. With the help of the feedback received, I could see myself improving from week to week. Even though this project took up a lot of time, I still think that it was a good learning experience as I have a better understanding and also appreciation towards a lot of the brands because without all this research, I wouldn't know about the efforts and thought process by the brands such as the origin of the name and why it is designed the way it is.
OBSERVATION
I observed that there were a lot of logos that had a lot of effort and thought put into it, making sure it reflects what the brand is about. On the other hand, there were also logos where I felt that it lacked meaning as it does not convey the message of what the brand is. I also observed that researching more in-depth about a brand and its history could help us understand better about the design approach of it. Besides that, while scrolling through the compilation of 100 logos, I noticed how my analysis in the beginning were really short as compared to my last week of analysing the logos.
FINDINGS
Because we were required to analyse 20 logos continuously throughout the weeks, I found myself myself struggling at times to juggle this project with the other works that needed to be done as well. Throughout the weeks I also started to analyse the logos more in depth, including its history, if there were any evolution of the logo and also brands with similar design approach. Because of that it required me more time to complete 20 every week as I kept trying to push myself to be more critical. But I understood that this was for our own good, because now I have a much better understanding about various brands and their logos, and a lot of them were really interesting to read up on.
FURTHER READINGS
Deconstructing Logo Design by Matthew Healey
This book consists of logo designs—analysed, giving readers a clear understanding of the process and specific details of a logo, how to target your market and also convey brand values. The book states that deconstructing a logo design will be beneficial when it comes to designing a successful and targeted logos, as well as helping in explaining to future clients how and why they suit and fit the brief.
I picked up this book as I felt that it will be helpful for me to read up on and understand the details of a logo. It will also help me when I'm analysing logos for this project.
The analysis includes the client, brand story, studio, art director, designer, typeface, colour and design approach. There's also labels pointing out from the logos that explains what the parts/elements mean.
