LECTURE NOTES

21/09/18 (Week 4)

This week, we were given a lecture on film production as we were going to recreate a part of a short film in the next week. Film production is said to be the process of making a film starting from an initial story/idea through scriptwriting, casting, shooting, directing, editing and screening the finished outcome. There are three stages of film production - Pre-production, Production, Post-production.

Pre-production: Preparations that are made for the shoot.
Production: Raw elements for finished film are recorded.
Post-production: Film is edited.

Shooting Practise & Editing #1

21/09/18 (Week 4)

This week, Mr Martin briefed us about our shooting practise, which involves us recreating a part of a scene from a short film we got to watch in class. We were split into 3 groups for this, and I teamed up with CK, Jessy, Sam, Brian, Alicia, Xiao Shi, Allen, Thooba and Shan May. We then had to assign roles for the cast/crew. The roles include producer, director, assistant director, art director, assistant art director (makeup artist), director of photography, assistant camera x2, and the two main characters in the short film Lalin and Nut.

2 Locations to shoot: Toilet and cafe

Once we knew what scenes we had to film, we started making preparations. These include cameras, costumes (outfits and mask), makeup (acne) as well as the props (file and the artworks). The directors also printed out the storyboard so we have a reference to look at while shooting.

26/09/18 (Week 5)

It's shooting day!

Here are the pictures from today, which includes the preparations as well as the behind the scenes pictures during the filming process.

Once we were done with the filming process, Mr Martin told us to use the footage we have from today and make an edit/draft of the video before the next class.

Shooting Practise & Editing #2

05/10/18 (Week 6)

This week, we were introduced to our second shooting practise, which is once again about recreating a short film. This time, it's done in smaller groups. I teamed up with Shan May, Sam, CK, Farzana, Velia and Dong Yong for this shooting practise. As usual, we had to assign roles such as actors, director, assistant director, director of photography and art director.

The short film that we got to watch in class had several different parts, each with a different theme. Each group will be recreating a theme from the video.

The short film is about an advertisement promoting a bar of soap, but filmed in different themes.
Our group got the theme "Edgy"

Here are some screenshots from the part of the video, showing the theme of edgy.

Crew & Cast List

Director: Dong Yong
Assistant Director: Shan May
Director of Photography: Farzana
Art Director: Jessica
Sound/Effects: Velia
Actors: Sam & CK

We started with the storyboard so we would have a clear idea of what to do while filming. Previously, we did the storyboard in detail which ended up being 5 pages long so Mr Martin asked us to summarise it and group the scenes that were of the same shots. Therefore, one of our group mate CK did the updated storyboard.

Here's the storyboard.

We've also made the decision to film in the photography studio and Taylor's Merchandise Shop in which we managed to get the permission to film.

As the art director, I started listing down the props we needed so I could prepare them before our shooting day.

I also made a plan for the actor's costumes so the actors could prepare their outfits.

Our video ended up requiring a lot of props so I got help from my team members to bring some of the props.

Here were the props.

19/10/18 (Week 8)

Fast forward to Friday which was our shooting day. We gathered in campus around 7.30am and around 8am we started preparing for the shots in the first location which was the photography studio. Our plan was to shoot at the studio from 8-12pm then move to the second location to film from 12-2pm. Turns out, our video required a lot of time to set up especially the lightings so we had to come back to the studio to film more scenes after we finished shooting the scenes in the store around 2pm.

After a long day since 8 in the morning, we managed to film everything we needed. We completed the whole shooting as well as voice recordings around 5pm.

Here's the behind the scenes pictures taken from the long day of shooting.

AND THAT'S A WRAP!

Once we were done with shooting, all the clips filmed were complied into a file to share it among the group. Now our task is to edit the video.
