LECTURE NOTES

31/08/18 (Week 1)

No class due to public holiday.

07/08/18 (Week 2)

This week, we got a lecture on cinematography. Mr Martin briefed us through the different types of shots used while filming.

Types of Shots
- Extreme Wide Shot
- Wide Shot
- Medium Wide Shot
- Medium Shot
- Medium Close Up
- Over the Shoulder Shot
- Close up Shot
- Extreme Close Up Shot

Moving on from that, we also learned about screen direction in which the subject should move in the same/one direction only. There's also a 180 degree rule whereby the camera should stay on a horizontal axis (line of action) and not cross the other side otherwise it'll be disorienting and confusing.

14/09/18 (Week 3)

For this week, we got a lecture on storytelling in film. From this lecture we got to learn and understand about the 3 act structure, which consists of the beginning, middle and end, with two plot points in between.

3 Act Structure
ACT I: Beginning - Introduction of a story, setup
- Plot Point I
ACT II: Middle - Confrontation, rising action, complications
- Plot Point II
ACT III: End - Resolution of problems, answer to obstacles

Mr Martin also showed us several videos and while watching them we got to identify and categorise the scenes using the 3 act structure.

2/11/18 (Week 10)
This week, we were given a lecture and Mr Martin discussed with us about storyboarding.

INSTRUCTIONS

31/08/18 (Week 1)

No class due to public holiday.

07/09/18 (Week 2)

In our first class, we were briefed on what our final project is about, and what are the processes in between which will be our projects. For our first project, we are required to produce a proposal including the story outline, main characters' introduction, storyboard and visual references.

Our task for this week is to start doing research and think of ideas on any issue concerned.

A list of some of my ideas
- Pause to consider there are paws to consider (adopt, don’t shop)
- Don't abandon your pets
- Don’t waste food (world hunger)
- Numbers (likes/followers) on social media don’t define your worth
- Makeup is a form of art regardless of the gender
- Beauty is found within

14/09/18 (Week 3)

I got to share my ideas with Mr Martin and he told me to choose an issue that I'm more interested in, then proceed with developing the idea.

Initial idea of plot

Don’t abandon your pets, they have feelings too.
Don’t let technology distract you from caring and loving your pets.
  • Girl has a dog since young and she would always take the dog to the park
  • Years past and girl became more attached to her phone and doesn’t care about the dog anymore
  • Girl decided to take dog to the park (like they always do as kids)
  • But this time she wasn’t planning to go there to ‘play’
  • Instead she just abandons the dog there and didn’t take him back home, thinking someone will just take him as a new pet
  • Dog just wandered around the park cluelessly and sad
  • Girl went on social media as usual (cause she’s addicted to being on her phone) and saw the news of a dog that got hit by a car nearby the same park she went
  • She took a closer look at the pictures and thought it was her dog, the dog she left to abandon.
  • She went to the park (thinking it was her dog that got hit)
  • BUT!! She saw her dog standing at the same spot where she left him
  • Turns out the dog hasn’t moved and was waiting for her
  • The picture of a dog that got hit was some other dog

21/09/18 (Week 4)

Mr Martin got to look at the initial idea of my plot, and mentioned that the ending is okay but I should make changes to the story in the middle. I needed to think further and develop my plot.

For now, I'm still determined to stick with the idea of "don't abandon your pets" as I find this topic to be more interesting among the others that I thought of, plus I like the idea of including a dog in my video. BUT... of course this might be more challenging since it involves a dog to be in the video, and the dog should be somewhat of "a good dog" that will cooperate while filming. While developing the storyline, I will try not to create plots that involves the dog to do something that's complicated.

Further Development of Idea

THEME OF VIDEO: DON’T ABANDON YOUR PETS, THEY HAVE FEELINGS TOO!

Through the theme of this video, I want to spread the message to individuals out there that pets are not meant to be used as toys/objects. You can't just get a pet as your toy to post about on social media and leave them hanging because you just simply don't care anymore or you're "lazy" to care for them. When you’re taking in a pet, you’re actually taking on a life that comes with great responsibility. It is a lifetime commitment, and not meant to be treated as objects such as gifts.

One day you’re loving them, and the next day you decide to leave them behind. Isn’t that just cruel?

28/10/18 (Week 5)

For this week, we had a shooting practise so there was no class.
I continued to work on the plot/storyline of the video.

BRIEF IDEA OF STORY

This is story of a girl who always wanted a dog, and she finally got one. It was all smiles and happiness at first, spending time with the dog and uploading posts about it on social media. Over time, girl got “bored” of dog and always ignores it. She also felt lazy to carry the responsibility of being a dog owner. Seemed like all she wanted was to have a dog to showcase it over the internet, and has no interest in taking care of it whatsoever. Therefore, one day she decided to abandon it. Leaving it behind.

IDEA FOR STORYLINE
  • Dog standing in a park alone, looking sad and lost.
  • Flashback to Christmas Day..
  • On Christmas Day, a girl received a dog as a gift
  • Feelings of excitement and happiness
  • Constantly takes pictures of and with the dog
  • Posts them on social media
  • As time past, girl is just constantly on social media
  • On social media, she posts about how much she loves her dog and stuff
  • In real life, she ignores dog and doesn’t want to interact with it
  • Dog would always get ignored
  • Dog’s food bowl left empty
  • Dog’s toys remain untouched
  • One day, the girl decides to abandon the dog and leave it behind
  • Girl takes the dog to the park that’s far from home
  • Girl takes collar off the dog
  • Girl leaves the place
  • Dog sits there in confusion and sadness  *text could be added on screen*
Ideas for the text (from the dog’s point of view)
  • I thought we came to play
  • Where is she going
  • Why is she leaving me here
  • Is she going back to get a toy
  • Did I do something wrong
  • Please don’t leave me here
  • I thought you wanted me...
  • I'll just stay here and hope you come back for me...
  • Please come back..

3 ACT STRUCTURE

ACT I: Christmas day, a girl received a dog as a gift.
PLOT POINT I: Girl would always spend time with the dog, and takes pictures of and with it.
ACT II: Girl got addicted to social media and started to ignore the dog and decide to not care about it.
PLOT POINT II: Girl took the dog to the park and abandoned it there.
ACT III: Dog stays there, not moving, hoping for the owner to come back.

After planning the storyline of my video, I decided to make a brief draft of the storyboard, using pictures I found on Google. *This isn't the actual/final storyboard, it is just for me to have a better idea of what I want my video to be like and how I can further develop my idea from there.*

Storyboard Draft Part 1

Storyboard Draft Part 2
05/10/18 (Week 6)
During this class, Mr Martin shared with us who are clients are, and that is FastJobs.

16/10/18 (Week 8)
This week, we got the meet our clients for the first time. We got to hear what they have to say and what they are expecting from our videos.

23/10/18 (Week 9)
On this day, Mr Martin sent us the grouping list so we can combine our ideas and come up with a video plan as a group.

Grouping List
I teamed up with Jennifer, Junwon and Jessy. As a group, we started sharing our initial individual storylines.

24/10/18 (Week 9)
Today, we got to meet with Mr Martin as a group according to a time schedule given. Then, we were left to further discuss the storyline and create our slides.

My group's idea was revolving a homeless man and a dog.

25/10/18 (Week 9)
The next day, Mr Martin sent a message on WhatsApp with things we needed to add to our slides for the presentation the next day. My group stayed back after class to further discuss on our storyline and update our slides according to the instructions given. Once we are done with that, we spilt the slide among ourselves for the presentation.

26/10/18 (Week 9)
First round of presentation to two of our clients. We got to present our slides and heard their feedback. We ended up having to make some minor changes to our idea and slides.

Here is our initial set of slides.

1/11/18 (Week 10)
It's the next week, and its round two of presenting to the clients our updated storyline. This time four clients came for our presentation. My groups got to present our updated idea, and received some feedback in return. The clients mentioned that the man doesn't have to be homeless and it could just be jobless.

With that said we need to further update our storyline and slides.

2/11/18 (Week 10)
During our class on Friday, we needed to work on our updated storyline and story breakdown (list of shots and scenes).

8/11/18 (Week 11)
It's an e-learning week. Mr Martin sent a text to our class group, telling us to include cast and props needed.

Here is our updated slides.

15/11/18 (Week 12)
My group and I got to consult with Mr Martin this week. Some changes were made to our storyline in which we needed to update it as well as the lists of scenes and shots.

We started by writing some extra notes on the slides to update them later on.

16/11/18 (Week 12)
In class, we further updated the slides then proceeded with working on the shots list.

We also planned out our cast and crew members as well as starting to contact the locations for shooting permission.
